The Inevitable Event (Al-Waqi‘ah)
Verses 41-56 GROUP_1434 56.41-56
41
وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ
Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left!
42
فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ
They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water,
43
وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ
and under the shadow of black smoke,
44
لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ
neither cool nor refreshing.
45
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
They had been affluent before,
46
وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنثِ الْعَظِيمِ
and they persisted obstinately in awful sin,
47
وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَئِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
and they used to say, ‘What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again?
48
أَوَ آبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ
And also our forefathers?’
49
قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ
Say, ‘Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones
50
لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَى مِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day.
51
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا الضَّالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَ
Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth,
52
لَآكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ
shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum,
53
فَمَالِؤُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ
and fill your bellies with it,
54
فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ
and shall drink boiling water on top of that.
55
فَشَارِبُونَ شُرْبَ الْهِيمِ
You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink.’
56
هَذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ
This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement.

Commentary
(a) ‘Those on the Left’ (ashab ash-shimal) means those to whom is condign punishment will be meted out. Deceived by the amenities they had in this world, they had made things other than God the centre of their attention, and this is the greatest human crime. They had made themselves so forgetful of the Hereafter, it was as if it was not to become a reality at all. Such people will receive severe punishment on the Day of Judgement.
